Why do people move?
Americans move for various reasons, here are a few.
If you were one of the 28 million Americans who moved their family between 2012 and 2013, you probably spent more on your move than you needed to. Recent studies have also revealed that the wealthier segments of the population are more likely to stay put; while seven percent of Americans earning $100,000 per year or more made a household move, Thirteen percent of households earning between $5,000 and $25,000 per year made such a move.
While it may seem that moving is a good thing, in many cases that simply is not true. The Census Bureau’s studies showed that fifteen percent of movers did so in search of a better home, eight percent were seeking cheaper living conditions, and about two percent were forced to move by way of foreclosure or eviction.
The 2013 Annual Social and Economic Supplement of the Current Population Survey of the United States Census Bureau reports most moves up to being housing related, with 48% of moves relating directly to housing needs and changes. While 30.3% of moves were family related, job relocations made up 19.4% and “other” was just 2.3% of all moves in the United States. The main reasons Americans move are;
Upsizing or Downsizing Home
Life’s changes due to marriage, a growing family, empty nesting, or increase in wealth leads to housing changes. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the average American holds their current job for an average of 4.6 years. This points to occupational mobility. This often includes mobility regarding post graduate studies, or changing careers. What this means is that it’s possible that after about 5 years, a person will land a new job in a new city or state, needing to relocate their home in the process. This often includes a change in income.
Marriage or Retirement
Marriage and divorce almost always requires relocation. This could be within the general area, or farther away. This is a major life change, it requires relocation into a suitable home that will meet the needs due to the recent change. While one person may be just beginning their family another can be slowing down and focusing more on relaxation.
